Right now it feels like I'm too busy. I feel as though I'm doing a million things but not getting anything accomplished!

I don't have the paperwork in the house (it stays in the barn) but let's see if I can figure this out - we have a pen of 6 calves that are weaned now, a pen of 7 still on milk for just a little bit yet, 3 hutches with calves in them, and then a pen with the 2 new girls - plus Chad just came and picked up the 2 newer boys and he's been here twice before. If my math is correct that's 18 (17 heifers and 1 bull that we keep for butchering) for us and 4 bulls for Chad. Total of 22 babies so far. I'm crossing my fingers and toes and whatever else I can and hoping that the next one is a heifer. It's our only Jersey. We used to have more of them. The first one came from my Grandpa. When we started milking he said he was going to buy me a red and white holstein. We started breeding for them and had them before he ever got us one. Then one random day my grandparents stopped in - not unusual but the fact that my grandma had her camera pointed at me was. Turns out they had a little jersey heifer in the back of the pick up truck. What a great surprise that was!

That was exciting, Heather! Did your grandma get a great picture of your reaction?

Oh what a great story Heather! I tell you Heather you make me tired listening to your days and nights and how hard you and your hubby work . I am not even sure I could keep your pace when I was younger. Oh but like all the Wildflowers I love all of your animal stories and antics, you keep us laughing and smiling. So, thank you.

Big Hugs,
Debbie

I agree with what Debbie said whole-heartedly! Heather I think you should consider compiling a collection of your stories in a book. “A Day in the Life” of a dairy farmer.

I have a couple pictures of that day around here somewhere.

I'll get to writing that book in my spare time - at the rate I'm going I might get it done by the time I'm 75 or so LOL!

It's been hot and humid and pretty miserable here the last few days - so wouldn't you know it, 2 first timers have their babies LOL! I don't have the pictures uploaded to the computer yet. I'm super excited though because one of them was our jersey!!!!! She was overdue and they have a shorter gestation than holsteins so there was a very high probability it was going to be a bull calf. Nope!!! She had a heifer :) Jerseys are so little and adorable, but man alive is this little one ornery!!! She reminds me so much of her grandma - she was one of my favorite cows. You'd see the cows kind of stumbling sideways and wonder what was going on and then out would pop this little jersey (she'd push them all out of the way!) This baby can not stand still while she's drinking her bottle of milk. She butts the bottle and looses the nipple then has to turn a couple circles before she settles down to drink again. This happens about 4 or 5 times before she's done. The other calf was a red and white heifer. She's much calmer but louder! She hollers louder than some of our cows! Then she gets her mom all excited and she starts bawling. It gets pretty loud during milking because mom won't come in until the last load so the baby has to wait for her milk. She only has one more day in the bucket then she goes in the bulk tank so I can get the baby fed sooner. Then it should be quieter again.
This brings the total to 19 heifer calves and 5 bull calves so far this year!!!!!

So happy you got your Jersey heifer you wanted Heather. Maybe it’s the heat that’s making her ornery. As with babies, things were fine and dandy until they got pushed out into the world, lol.

I don't understand why I keep having trouble. I make posts but every time I try to upload the calf pictures it says "unable to reach the site" :( I guess I'll have to try again tomorrow. I've already tried 4 times tonight.....

I told her to stay put while I went to get her bottle. When I came back out I couldn't find her. She was actually under the tractor behind the tire LOL!

I'll have to take some more pictures. This is about 10 minutes after she was born and I (surprisingly) don't have any others:

She's still a talker but her mama doesn't get as excited anymore.

We have a little break then another group due to have their babies.

A storm went through last night and it's so nice outside now. The cows were pretty miserable with the heat and humidity (me too) but they're very happy today. It's supposed to be nice all week :)

So precious! If one morning you find a random person wandering your property…it’s just me looking for baby cows and kittens! :) and if you let me stay long enough, maybe I’ll catch a glimpse of a lightning bug!

You don't have to look very hard LOL! I'm sure the cats will meet you on the road and we have 3 calf huts up front that you can see from the road - Tatiana, Daisy, and Tutti will probably come out and welcome you all as well. I'll get the cookies and iced tea ready :)

The black and white one is from the first litter born this spring. They grey one is one of the youngest ones. I just found another one that's not out wandering around yet. It's not very friendly but that will change soon LOL! The grey one in the picture wasn't very friendly either but now it's one of the first ones to greet me when I come outside and it loves to have it's chin rubbed. It purrs so loud - one of my favorite sounds.

Speaking of purring, I have to share a story. I was never around cats growing up, so in our first house a stray shows up every night. My husband started feeding it and got it used to him enough that he was able to carry it inside to meet me. I had only heard stories of how mean cats can be so I was apprehensive. When I started to pet him he started purring. I had never heard purring , so I thought he was growling and ready to attack me, so I ran from the room. My husband got a good laugh about that, lol. Y’all I adore cats and have had several for over 40 years now!

That's funny Wanda! I bet it was shocking never experiencing it before. I'm glad you gave them a second chance :)

Dewdrop was a naughty girl this morning. We were making some modifications to their pen so we can start weaning them. After we took the panel down but before we could add the extra board on the gate she hopped through it and went for quite a run! She ran laps around the yard, house, my in laws house and the barn before we could catch her. And she was not happy about being caught! She head butted my husband and tried to jump over him as he was trying to stop her!!!!! I would expect that behavior out of Snowflake - she's the ornery one. Apparently there's some orneriness in Dewdrop as well LOL!
