Hi girls!
I make my strawberry jam without pectin - straight berries and sugar. I went online to see if this could also be done with blueberries, and was very pleased to find the answer to be "yes!" But I also read that this one lady makes her jam without a follow-up water bath to seal. She fills the hot jars with the hot jam, adds the seals and screw-rings, turns upside down for 15 minutes and then back right side up... she said within a couple of hours the jars "pop" and are sealed... Is that right? I've never heard of this before! Sounds so easy!!!
Also - our neighbor insists that you can just use your dishwasher's wash and then dry cycle to clean and sterilize your jars... My aunt had a bird when I asked her. What do you think - is that acceptable and safe, too?
I'm happy to go the long, old-fashioned route, of course! But those sure seem like nice options when you've got a boatload of produce to can.. Please let m know what you think!
Thanks so much!

Nini- Some dishwashers have a "sterilize" setting. Mine gets hot enough that you can burn yourself on the dishes. But some of the more energy efficient ones just blow air and not heat. So you have to see if it is a heated wash and dry or an air dry.
Have you ever tried the MaryJanes Chillover for jam making? It's amazing!

Nini- from the magazine extras page just in case you want to try it: I have had it and it tastes as good as or better than "regular" jam without the sugar high afterwards! You can adjust the sugar level a bit more or less to taste.
Chillover® Strawberry Jam
2 lbs. strawberries, washed, hulled and crushed to yield 4 cups crushed berries 2 cups organic cane sugar 2 packets MaryJane's Chillover® Powder
1. Combine crushed strawberries and sugar in a large pot. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. 2. Sprinkle and stir Chillover Powder into liquid and boil rapidly for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. 3. Remove from heat and can in sterile jars (refer to a canning manual for complete canning instructions).
Chillover® Raspberry Jam Substitute raspberries for strawberries.
Chillover® Blackberry Jam Substitute blackberries for strawberries.

Last year at the farmers market I asked a woman about her jam and she did the upside down method. I bought a jar and bc she made it that morning we ate it immediately. I don't trust that method for long term storage.
As far as sterilizing goes. Georgia states on their extension website that jars that are processed in boiling water for 10 minutes or longer don't need to be pre-sterilized! http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/how/can_01/sterile_jars.html this gave me peace of mind when I'd use the dishwasher to heat the jars. However I usually boil them in my canner while I'm making my jam. Then I turn the burner down to low while I'm filling the jars. They get sterilized, heated, and my water for the bath is up to temp!

My husband and I love blackberry jam but we don't like the seeds. Can I use this same recipe with just the juice?
