Okay,

We've had a couple of exciting / annoying days (check the GoFundMe), but it's all finally happening!!

We had a tough time getting everything together at first, but we're (mostly) legal / roadworthy now, and all packed up to go. We've a '96 Ford Windstar.

Please pray for traveling mercies. We have a few things to pick up / trash in Aiken, SC before we head North.

We'll be traveling straight (as straightly as possible) starting in Norfolk, VA. If you live nearby any large cities, please let us know. If you know of a farm / ranch in need of a day worker for an afternoon, DH would love to help out while I watch the pets. We could definitely use the cash for our trip and food expenses. Anything left-over will go toward our living expenses in Missoula.

Thank y'all!

Well. We're stuck.

We left Hickory, NC. Made it to Aiken, SC. We emptied our storage. On our way back northward, we stopped in Rock Hill, SC to see family -- my first time meeting DH's aunt, uncle, and two of his cousins. We left there and to make a long story short, there was a huge oil leak this morning, and now we're in a truck stop in Salisbury, NC where the mechanics are telling us the transmission must be removed in order to repair the transmission seal...

More info on the blog and GoFundMe. I haven't the energy to type it all again.

Bottom line, we don't have any more money to repair this vehicle. We were about to go get ice for our cooler, and then stop at a friend's overnight where we'd be fed, get a shower, and move on. Another friend in Norfolk will be sharing a meal with us, before we continue West. This is a hopes and dreams ideal... It became such the minute our housemate said we could no longer live there, and the boss man said DH could no longer work there. (More on that in the blog and GoFundMe if you're unfamiliar.)

Last week was DH's birthday. His family and mine sent him a lot of money. Most of which has gone into this trip, getting us a vehicle, etc... He's let his dad know what has happened, but he can't help right now, and neither can my parents. We're stuck. For the moment. I'm certain someone will come through, but the wait is frustrating.

Laura, I continue to pray for you. Remember, our true path is not always the way we think we want to go. I can attest to that from my own life experiences! Keep your eyes (and your heart) open to possibilities. And please stay safe!

Happy Day!

Thank y'all for the prayers and advice. DH is now speaking to the guy who sold it to us. He has said he's not going to leave us high and dry, though we're not sure yet what that means exactly.

Basically, the issue with the transmission -- the previous owner had replaced a lot of things on it, but then he asked his friend to sell it for him, and as far as we know / were told, it seems to have been sitting awhile. Not entirely neglected, but at the same time, the fluid levels (oil, transmission) were low when DH checked them before agreeing to purchase. We made a note to get more of each soon, but wanted to insure it was running okay before adding more fluids to it. They weren't so low as to cause any concern or suspicion.

So, we'll see. Please continue praying. We're among good people. The management here (it's a 24/7 truck stop) even gave us free dinner from the restaurant and free showers last night after we had spent the day calling family, and keeping an eye on the pets.

I have a horrid sunburn (multiple burns layered over each other) from standing around when the car broke down. We had no sunscreen. Didn't think we'd need it... So that shower made all the difference. I have aloe gel, a cooling towel, and soap with oatmeal in it which helped take a lot of the sting out.

Will the seller of the van refund the amount of the repair??
Can Drew possibly make a little extra cash at the truck stops washing trucks? (not sure how that works)

Hi, Lisa!

Actually, we are working on that now. We have been planning to stop briefly in some areas, hop on Craigslist and find farmers and other general laborers seeking day laborers for the day(s) we are in their area. However, we were hoping to not have to do that this early in the trip.

DH will be talking to the garage boss tomorrow morning first thing to see if he minds giving Drew a few dollars per hour to wash or clean any trucks that come in. He didn't ask this today as we were waiting to meet with the previous owner.

The previous owner has given us a little money to go toward the repairs. He also looked under the van himself (he's a mechanic on the side of his day job) and is willing to fix it himself, except that it will take up to 2-3 more days before we could leave, as he has to continue working. Also, it's not the most cost-efficient idea as his working on it would require renting a dolly to tow it a 2 hour drive from here. Not bad, but still more money down the drain.

Okay, so I'm back now with updates -- I just really needed sleep yesterday.

Yesterday morning, the truck stop asked a local sheriff, who is a regular there if he could have us leave. This was neither good nor bad. We agree we were there a bit too long, but it was bad in that driving with the transmission leaking like that could easily completely ruin our transmission. The previous owner won't return the money for the car, and has completely stopped speaking with us as far as I can tell. He seemed a reasonable man, but he stated that as we'd purchased the car as-is, he felt no obligation to discuss it with us at all and only did so as we'd had it less than a week and even he thought it a little odd the transmission began leaking that soon. Yesterday marked one week that we'd had the vehicle.

With the sheriff there, we had no choice but to leave. We had been told of a mechanic 10 minutes away. Got there, they don't work on transmissions. We had tried calling them, but there was no answer, and it was closer than any other location. From there, we found a nearby Shell station. The van quit moving the minute we pulled in. DH struggled to push it fully into a parking space.

A few hours later, a mechanic answered our Craigslist ad which we'd posted hoping someone would help for the right price (no more than what we had in pocket). Turns out, this guy makes a living just finding folks in need of help and doing what he can to assist for less than what most people would do the jobs for. Plus, he is a certified mechanic who has been in our situation before, only with a wife, 3 children, and pets.

He wanted $200 for the job, but we talked him down a bit. Then we had to find a place to stay, and a woman at the gas station saw our problem, and just handed Drew practically everything in her wallet for us a motel room for a couple nights. The mechanic and his family live at a motel where he does maintenance work and other odd jobs. He made a deal with the management here to lower the cost of a 2-night stay for us. We're 3 rooms down from him and his family.

Things aren't going quite as smoothly as we had originally hoped or planned, but I think I understand now... a little more. This is an excellent opportunity to see how other people live, and to show the world a little bit as we experience a taste of these lifestyles for ourselves. Until last night, I'd never been in a motel, much less one where families live for extended periods of time. One may well imagine the many thoughts crossing my mind last night -- most of them narrated by my mother's voice. I was pleasantly surprised to find the room fairly well kept (it's an old building, so not perfect), and while not a place I'd want to stay full-time forever, it's not uncomfortable.

The van should be fixed by tomorrow evening; Sunday at the latest.

Forgetmenot - Thank you.
Song Sparrow - This is very true. It's amazing to me that it really is okay to have problems in one's life. Granted, we should all learn from our mistakes, and ought not take advantage of others. But if we do not rely on one another, where will be then?

We only had enough to pay for 2 nights at the motel, and that was with our mechanic talking management into giving us a discount (we technically got 1 night free). On Thursday, I made a call to a friend from college whose sister happens to live in the Winston-Salem area. Her sister, a minister, drove to pick us up and we're staying in her home while the van repairs are completed. Mechanic got started late today due to something happening at his regular job, so it won't be finished til tomorrow.

I spoke to my friend's sister -- her daughter no longer lives here, and left behind clothes for donation. I now have a few new pairs of jeans to embroider before donating them myself!! I'm super excited and can't wait to decide what to put on them. Once I get some done, I hope to give them directly to someone in need of jean clothing -- hoping the embroidery will brighten their day when they wear it. Silly, maybe, but it gives someone something they need while offering new life to jeans that would've been trashed.

I'm more excited about this move, the travel for it, now than I've ever been. I'm getting a taste for what this life has to offer, and well... it's the jazz.

I need your prayers in a major way today.

So... our van has been parked up at the Biscuit King parking lot in Lexington, NC since Tuesday. Our mechanic is on a 'it should be done tomorrow kick' so bad, I sent DH to check on the van tonight. We were originally told it would be done by Friday at the latest.

Biscuit King sent me a message on my business Facebook page (I did good and used liquid chalk for advertising on the van windows) saying they will have to tow it if it's not moved soon. I have replied politely, explaining what has happened with the mechanic. Basically, his own work and life got in the way. Well, it's supposed to be done tomorrow.

Also, our temporary tag has now expired thanks to the breakdown. We can get another in another state (or so we've been told), but in the meantime... yeah. We really need to leave this state.

I cannot even say everything we need prayer for right now... several unspokens here. Thank you!

Thank you, SongSparrow.

It's been a nutty day... *deep breath*

So... the mechanic told us it would be done by 7p tonight. We went to Biscuit King, and a friend has offered to help with getting a tow this evening. Biscuit King has said we can leave our van there until Monday night.

There has been a plot twist, though. My MIL was in Mississippi and totaled her car. Her boyfriend is an expert mechanic and has been in the family for years. He has towed the crashed car home to GA, and is rebuilding it. He spoke to DH today and offered to give it to us for $500. The catch? It'll be several weeks before it's finished, so we have to find a place to hole up for a few weeks.

I got in contact with my sister-friend in VA whom we were planning to visit anyway. After reading what we had been through this week alone, she said she'd help however she could. If the van moves, we'll drive up there to her to work and stay for a few weeks while MIL's BF rebuilds the car. We'll sell the van (among other items).

Tonight, we're staying in the motel again, thanks to some friends. We're sick of being stranded... And it looks like the van has low pressure in a tire... hopefully it's not going flat.

Okay... so the seal was replaced, mechanic put fluids into the van, and...

...the transmission is completely fried. Mechanic is going to sign a paper stating that the guys sold us a jimmy-rigged lemon, and we'll be speaking to a lawyer tomorrow to try to sue this guy and get our money back as he's refusing to handle it congenially and either repair it himself, or give us the money back voluntarily.

In the meantime, we have practically no money. Our van still hasn't been moved from Biscuit King and is due to be towed in the morning. DH will be going there first thing tomorrow (leaving early) to push the van out of the parking lot and into a new parking space where people park on the street all the time. It can't stay there, but at least it will be relatively safe.

Right now, we have the motel room for one last night. We're taking this opportunity to severely downsize everything we own and sell as much as will bring a price. This is difficult. We spent 8 hours outside in the heat today waiting for cash to get the room another night. Now, we're having to go through everything and make some very tough decisions. A lot of what I have with me are things passed down to me from my grandma. Dishes she used or gave me that I'll need when I get to my next home. Other household goods and decor that were in her home... It's not much, really. It could all fit in one box, most likely. But that one box is a lot of extra weight in addition to each of our suitcases, a backpack apiece, 2 pet carriers, a litterbox, a cooler full of any food we have at that point, a cooler bag for dry goods, and the items listed in my Etsy shop...

We pack pretty light. But we have pets, need food, and I'm not throwing good clothing away when I've downsized it to a bare minimum. I have a few books I'm keeping as well.

I'm not sure if we'll have a place to stay tomorrow... I'm trying to sell things to make that happen.

Hello again... sorry it's been awhile since I updated here.

For anyone who didn't read it in the GoFundMe Updates, the gentleman who picked our van up several weeks ago (to scrap it), his wife came along as she works for the scrap yard part time. Turns out, she is originally from a county neighboring my own. She grew up in the same town my mother did, a 20 minute drive from my parents' house. My grandmother very likely taught her in highschool!! We know a lot of the same people, and our families know of each other. Long story short, she contacted her boss, and within less than an hour that night, DH had a job, and we had a place to stay for another week.

We've remained in the motel, though DH's boss took our cats in for now. We'll be getting them back soon. It was just temporary, while we are here. Gingy stayed with us. About 9 or 10 weeks back now, the Internet went down here, which is why I haven't been updating as usual. We've run into a lot of issues with the motel and the owner here, but it's literally the only affordable place in the area. Our only choice. Issues included, but were / are not limited to:
- super rude staff
- lack of internet... they're not going to repair it, but it's apparently okay to continue advertising it
- major plumbing concerns
- probable mold in our shower
- bedbugs... we each have bites up and down our arms
- housekeeping hardly ever stops by anymore... even when the owner joins them on rounds.

The downside is that we've spoken to MIL, and it seems her boyfriend isn't going to be able to repair that car they had for us after all. Also, DH's boss has informed us that she will need to let him go by October 10th as the scrap yard business apparently slows down a great deal over the winter. She has to let multiple people go, but DH was her most recent hire, so...

On the up side, we've come up with a new idea to boost our game a bit. At this point, it's a bit too late in the year to be traveling roads we've never been on in snow like we've never seen. So we already know we need to wait till Spring to start really traveling again. That means we need to find a place to hunker down where we can get some work done and make some cash. I happened across some information on bartending school in Greensboro, NC. Turns out it's pretty reasonable (just under $300 per person) and at the end of 2 weeks, we would be nationally certified bartenders for life. We've decided to give it a shot.

We've friends who can get us to Greensboro, but once there, we will need a place to stay for awhile (we were thinking another hotel, only one that is set up for extended stays). The bartending school has a nationwide job placement program, and a guy I spoke to there quoted me an estimated $20-30 per hour wages with tips if we're good. It's not totally decided yet what to do after school aside from continue moving forward. We would like to relocate to Norfolk, VA until Spring as we have friends there who could assist us a little while we get settled in and we know the area (where the local bars, etc. are) meaning we could have applications in pretty quickly and jobs *hopefully* soon upon arriving.

No... bartending isn't something I necessarily want to do. Right now, it is literally a certification opportunity to give us a leg up from here. I can only pray it will work out as we're hoping. Please pray for financial wisdom and that we can find a non-lemon vehicle that's right for us.

Thank you all for reading, for the many prayers and all the support and understanding we have received here. The road from here on -- it doesn't look any easier, but, I know we're on the right path.

Well, we've run into yet another obstacle. A bit ago, there was someone in the room adjoining the wall our bed is against in the motel. For whatever reason -- this individual's presence brought the bedbugs out of the woodwork. When they left, the bugs came through the wall to our side and got in our bed. Fortunately, everything in the room is very washable in hot water, or inside bug proof containers that never open, and remain away from the bug-zone. So we're not going to lose a bunch of stuff over it. But... DH's boss did some personal research online and learned the bugs could potentially attach to his clothing and travel to work. She brought him his full advance through his final day of work Tuesday night. So we have some cash now, but if we're not careful it will all be sunk in one place to stay. We've friends in two different churches willing to help if they can, but we've got to find that out first. I've messaged the pastors of both to update them on the situation. Prayers would be helpful right now. Specifically: - a way to get to Greensboro as we still have no vehicle of our own. - a place to stay in Greensboro with our pets, or at the very least a place to stay, and a temporary sitter for the cats again. - enough funds to survive in Greensboro. - classes and memorization go smoothly. - a vehicle to leave NC once we're ready.

Also, when we were in Hickory, DH learned he had an unpaid traffic ticket from 2013. This ticket racked up enough points to cause his GA license to be revoked in NC. He never got an NC ID or license, as our vehicle was repo'd before he had the opportunity or funds. Unaware of the revocation, and having forgotten the ticket, he was helping a friend who needed someone to drive them in their vehicle around town. They happened to go through a checkpoint, and he received a ticket for Driving With License Revoked. We spoke with local officials, as well as family members who have worked law enforcement or had experience with them in other states. DH received some advice we now know is bad -- basically, they said to leave the state as we were already moving anyway. They told him to pay the fine later from another state once we were in a more stable position with a steady job. Well... DH's court date came along in August, and we were stranded here. At that point we had learned that not taking care of the fine now is a bad idea because with the license revoked in NC, he cannot renew his license or get a new one in another state! Well... he went to court in August. They refused to give him a court appointed attorney to aid and advise in the case. They claimed this was due to the fact he has no prior criminal record...??? I have called Legal Aid and other legal advisement organizations, and no one will give me an answer other than they have nothing to do with traffic courts or they think he should hire an attorney -- which isn't an option financially. His next court date is in early November.

Definitely prayers, please...

We've been looking for a place to stay for a few months here in Winston-Salem, NC. The plan was to find DH a job nearby and use the money from that to attend the bartending school. We found a place, but no job yet. We're not renting without work to back our rent up.

While we've been looking for apartments and work, we've had to be super careful with money. We weren't too worried about the motel payments because another family has gone up to 3 months paying nothing while jobless. So we skipped a week and a half of payments so we could have food. Tonight, the owner kicked us out. She threatened to call the police, and took DH's license, refusing to return it unless a friend let her copy his ID as well -- that wasn't about to happen. So we left with friends who came to our rescue. No idea what we're doing next other than just being even more aggressive in our apartment / job searching. We've talked about Section 8, but the Housing Authorities in this area have extensive waiting lines for housing.

Any information anyone can give me here is welcome... Thank you.

About the license, maybe you can get the owner for attempted identity theft. Not certain if that is a crime. Maybe worth a try.

I spoke to a friend earlier who claims it is a criminal offense for her to have taken it. We'll talk to police asap and see what they say.
