So, I am re-reading a few past issues of MJF magazines, while the heater repair man is working on our heater…
And was wondering if anyone here has made these yet.. oct-Nov issue, pg. 14)
I don’t normally keep molasses on hand, how important to the recipe is it?
I have made the sawdust-dryer lint and old candle wax ones.. but I am intrigued by the coffee grounds one.

Hi Grace,
The molasses in the recipe sinks to the bottom of the fire starter and helps the whole thing catch fire. If you don't have molasses on hand and don't want to make a special trip to the store, I bet you could adjust the sawdust-dryer lint recipe that you've made in the past and add a couple scoops of dry coffee grounds to the wax.

Goodness knows I have plenty of dryer lint (heehee) and coffee grounds and my hubby doesn't mind me 'sweeping up' the saw dust on the floor of his workshop!!!
In trhe past I have added dried lavender branches and over dried lavender buds.. Rosemary works well too as it is highly flammable!
Now I have another reason (besides the snow) to drink more coffee... lol!

Grace, let us know how they turn out for you. When I read this, I thought if I had more cold weather where we could use the fireplace, I would be interested in trying to make them. I am curious how they actually work and if it is worth the time making them.

I've only even made one type of fire starters, wrapping pinecones in newspaper and tieing off each end like an old fashioned piece of candy. They didn't work so well, I think I had too many layers of newspaper wrapped to tightly, no oxygen got in. I would love to try these for our upcoming camping season. Grace, what issue was that in?

Hey April,, it was in the Oct-Nov 2022 issue,, pg.14
The dryer lint/saw dust ones work pretty well..
use a muffin tin, put in those paper cupcake thingies,, loosely add a bit of dryer lint and saw dust and then carefully pour melted wax into the paper cups..you can insert stems of wicking into the wax before it sets up.
I save my candle 'butts' to use the wax,,,
if you don't have sawdust,,, you probably could use shredded up paper towel/napkins/paper...
I like the ide of using the coffee grounds, hopefully it will have a coffee scent.. after all, our gaedwn compost can only use so much coffee!!! heeheehee!

Back in the day when I used to backpack with Scouts, we also used paraffin wax or old melted crayons in our fire starters.

Candy, I remember the old crayons being melted down trick..
Speaking of Scouts..
I remember saving all the little candle Stubes,, then melting them down in an old coffee can.. then with an old hand turned egg beater whipping up some of the
melted candles,, pouring majority of melted wax into and old milk carton, allowing it to harden,,, then tearing the carton off and slathering on the 'whipped' candle
wax.. and adding glitter...
I am sure every mom loved receiving those frosted hard as a rock decorative candles... lol!
Right up there with the ivory soap adorned with Tulle netting and sequins,,, lol!
Ahhh! memories...
