Hi Farmgirls!
I'm new here. I'm Tanna in North TX. I'm married almost 11 years with 2 boys ages 10 and 6 whom I homeschool. We're in a 1920's house in an urban area but we garden as much as we can. We grow herbs and whatever veg we can.
The boys are very involved in 4-H and we're trying to talk dh into hens. DH is a transplant from England and he is certain that chickens would die from the heat here. Whenever I, or my sons, mention chickens he says it is animal cruelty in this heat. I think he thinks he will die from the heat here :)
I get lots of eye-rolls or the smile and head shake from family and friends trying not to call me 'old fashioned'. I love to knit vintage patterns and generally do things the 'old fashioned' way I suppose. My neighbors are astounded that I make bread without a bread machine. I always get a giggle from that. Or that we make dandelion jelly from the dandelions in the back yard. Or even just making lemonade with lemons.
Anyway, I look forward to meeting everyone. While none of what family or friends say or do bothers me, it is nice to know I am not the only crazy, old fashioned, Farmgirl out there.

I'm an old-fashioned girl too. My family calls me "1930's Girl". I don't own a cell phone or dishwasher. I like things the simple way.
I'm sure you'll feel right at home here...there are a lot of kindred spirits.

Thanks for the welcome ladies!
I think it is funny when I not only get the eye-rolls but also a call for another jar of jelly or some warm bread, a cup of tea, and a chat.
I was hanging out laundry the other day and my neighbor asked if I wanted to use her dryer. It was 104 degrees outside, I wasn't worried about my clothes getting dry. No one has every understood why I actually like haning out my clothes.
Joyce, as for cell phones they are on the bottom of my list. I refused to have one but dh bought me one for Christmas a few years ago. I was pg with our youngest and he insisted I have it with me in the car. Now everyone complains that my phone's mail box isn't set up and they can't leave me a message. Or they are in wonder that I don't text. Ah well, that is a completely different topic for another day probably. But I love that you are called "1930's Girl" That is great!

It sounds like you fit in perfect with all of us here :) It's so nice to have you aboard and I look forward to getting to know you :)
Oh, some of the hatchery catalogs tell what temperatures the different breeds of chickens do best in. It might be good to check it out and then maybe your honey will give in :)

Welcome Tanna. I think you will find many kindred spirits here, no matter what the age. My daughter is 31 and very much into making her own bread, growing her own vegies, canning, picking berries, and hoping to start her own Farmes Market business and perhaps a CSA one day. I think it is#324;t so much old fashioned, but more bringing back what is really important, and enjoying the wholesomeness of the quality food we can prepare from scratch.
I say, good for you, and keep it up!

Hi Tanna and welcome to the forum! Yep those same people who call you old fashioned are probably first in line to get some of your homemade goodies. Just tell them there is love in every bite of your goodies and handmade creations. You've found MJs and you'll fit in like a spoke in a wheel :)

Hi Tanna, Welcome from Northern Kentucky! We sound very similar...I to live in an urban cottage from the 20's, knit with vintage patterns (heck, any pattern, really) and my dh and I have raised vege and herb gardens, too..I think you'll find that you're not alone at ALL on this site!

Amy, yes dandelion jelly is realy and the kids love it. It tastes similar to honey. Here is a recipe similar to mine:

Welcome, Tanna. Tell your hubby there are chickens in Texas. And alive, too! He's probably just thinking of all the work he'll have to do with building a coop and all that. Men.
I make bread, too. And do all the old fashioned stuff. I love it. I would have loved to live in the 1800's except I'd really miss the air-conditioer BAD. I like my AC. But I have the milk goats and cows and chickens (it's hot here, too) and gardens. I grow most all of our food, too.
I am sure you will fit right in here with the rest of us old-fashioned farmgals.

Welcome to the farmgirls forum Tanna, I also live in Texas but a few hundred miles away from you. I live in Alvin,Texas which is not far from Galveston. I also make my bread from hand, love making jams and doing things in a more simplier way of life.

Hi Laurie,
We make it down to the Galveston area sometimes. The last time we were down thsy way was before the hurricane. We were at Chrystal Beach. I don't think the B&B we stayed in is there anymore. Thanks for the welcome :)
