Being here in the northeast, we have cold winter.
As I get older, I really am not liking the cold... I would much rather spend my winters down south, and summers up here! Alas, I am not rich, so that's out for now!!

Starting in about October I wear a wool sweater every day. I also wear wool socks, if the temps during the day are below 40. When it starts to get really bitter in January, then I've got my long undies on under everything. I love flannel shirts, but they just don't keep me warm enough.
Last winter I was sick a lot, and there were some really frigid days when I would keep a hat on in the house- our house is not cold, we have cast iron radiators that hold the heat- but that is how much I hate to be cold !
I am thinking about getting some flannel or fleece lined jeans for this year. And, maybe making some flannel lined fleece pants for the days I don't go anywhere!
What do you all wear when it's cold out?

Hi Brenda,

I'm from east Texas, so we don't get that much cold weather. We only have a couple of months of cold. Most of the time I worry more about the hot summers and how to stay cool. I think flannel lined pants sound so comfy. I would definately try it. I have some flannel lined denim shirts and they are really warm. I used to get cold all the time when I was anemic and used a heating pad under my feet at night when I slept. Now I have entered the hot flash stage and throw all the covers off part of the time.LOL We try to use just the fireplace to heat with most of the time. I just hate high electric bills. When I have company I do put on the heating unit though. You know not everyone is as tough as us farmgirls.LOL

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.

I'm from SE Oklahoma, with cold weather lasting only a few months too. I prefer the heat, so when we get a cold snap, ice storms or snow, I put on an under-layer of lycra leggings & turtleneck long-sleeve shirt(that doesn't breath like cotton)to hold in the body heat. Layer up with a thick flannel shirt, woolie sweater, neck scarf & a fun crochet hat (for indoors or out)long skirt or denim jeans, thick socks, comfy lined booties or boots & trusty barn coat or lined work vest (if working outside). Warm gloves are a must. As fall comes around, I like to keep ingredients for my favorite warm drinks in the pantry (hot teas, hot juices, coffees & cocoa) - Warm socks on my feet at all times ( including bedtime!) and I always keep a few warm shawls & throws (wool) available to wrap around my shoulders when I'm doing stationary work (art, sewing or crafting)indoors.

The flannel lined jeans are a fantastic idea! Did you know that you can line your old jeans with flannel jammies and it works just great?! My daughter works at a ski resort here in West Virginie and she gets super cold. She loved the flannel jeans but wanted something other than just red lined jeans so we took some of her old jeans and sewed flannel pj bottoms into them...it worked great and she said they were super comfy.Good luck staying warm.

I just layer--I refuse to buy winter clothes while we are here in TN. I wore flip flops up until January 5th in TX last year...then I just put on Crocs and socks!!! : ) But, now that I am temporarily in TN ; ) I am just layering. I walk the dog 4 miles a day and last night it was COOOOOOOOOOLLLLLDDDDDDD and windy....I put on my lycra blend capris with my long length fleece pants...a long sleeve t-shirt and a fleece sweatshirt and I actually put on a fleece winter hat...ME...fleece hat...haven't worn one in 5 years...forgot I had it!! LOL
Sneakers and socks and I was good to go. Around the house, I just add my sweatshirt and when we go out...I look like a crazy person, layered up and it literally takes me 5 minutes to get down to a doable layer while eating out. Charlie has a HUGE puffy coat that reaches to his knees. He is warm, warm, warm!!! Scott refuses to wear winter clothes, so he just freezes...lol..can't change him. ; O

Oh, and how about skirts? I was wondering if I made some warm, cozy flannel patch skirts and wore them with warm tights, if I'd be just as warm or warmer?!!
Nancy- I like your idea of a crochet hat for inside or out- cuter than the big old bulky hats I have, I'm sure!! Wanna make me one? ;)
I envy you girls that only have a little while of cold every year.... that's what I'm looking for!

I would suggest going down to your local outdoors store. They have some new thermal underwear that has a lot of silk in it that is supposed to be really amazing at keeping in body heat. Another thing I like to do is wear a turtleneck under a sweater or cardigan around the house. The other night when I was really cold I dug out some fingerless gloves that Triblecime here on the forum made and wore those to bed. They are surprisingly warm.

One thing I saw on a survival show that really made me thing was that if our feet are cold it is because the blood has cooled too much between our body's core and our extremities. So if you can layer up higher up like around your thighs and such to reduce heat lose, your toes will warm up. If your feet are already cold, socks will help but socks can only keep your feet from losing more heat, they can't increase the heat. Your blood has to do that. So maybe adding an extra layer of underwear or some of those biker shorts under your pants can help keep your blood warmer for the trip down to your toes.

Brenda: Don't laugh, okay you can laugh. Last night, here in Louisiana (Way down South), the temperature got in the high 30's. I think it got to 39 degrees. I had my wool socks, flannel PJ's on, and the electric blanket on high! I love the cold weather, but not much colder. ROFL I don't know what I'd do if I had to live where you do. LOL Keep warm.

I have started wearing leggings under dresses. Wool socks and leg warmers under pants. Scarves around my neck. Fingerless gloves while working on the computer. Layer, Layer, Layer!!!

It's been VERY cold, very WET, and very windy the last few weeks around here.

Do what you love, love what you do.

The key to staying warm and comfy here in the winter is layers, when it gets cold here, I wear thinsulate bottoms and mens undershirt tanktop, jeans (and if its really cold, flannel lined jeans)longsleeve t-shirt and sweatshirt, stocking cap and gloves, along with insulated work boots with heavy socks. That way if it warms up, I can reduce layers as needed, and as it cools back down, I can put them back on. We do get some pretty cold winter days here, down to "0" or so, and if the wind is up, the chill factor can make it down right misrable. As long as I keep my feet, hands and head dry and warm, I'm fine.

Hey Marly, thats down right nippy for the deep south, we are having low 20's at night here right now, but getting up to 65 or so during the day. Stay warm my friend.

I'd like to know if anyone has a source for lined wool dress pants.

I do ok with long johns under jeans or fleece pants when I'm at home, but that's awfully bulky and too warm for the office.

I really layer. I use cuddleduds underneath a long sleeve shirt and then a down vest, or my shearling vest combined with a sweater. I always have a knit hat on (usually that someone has made me, or I've knit myself). I always wear gloves or mittens, too.

We keep the temp pretty low in the house, so we bundle up--our 1920's cottage isn't very well insulated, so I always have a portable space heater that moves from the living room to the bedroom each night, and we layer up while sitting around. I also always have a great pair of fuzzy warm slippers that have an outdoor sole on them, so I can keep my feet warm and still manage to get things done.

Amie--Check LL Bean They have some really nice lined pants, both dress and casual. I have an insulated wool blazer from them, and I had some lined khaki-style dress pants, too.

I got some silk turtlenecks for $5 and nice lined wool dress pants for about $20 at Sierra Trading Post - a great place to shop. If you get on their mailing list or e-mail list they send out offers for 15-20% off or sometimes free shipping or sometimes both. They have mens and childrens clothes also. My favorite store for on line shopping.
I don't like high utility bills and our house was built in 1916, not very insulated, drafty windows and doors, so I layer, turtlenecks, sweaters, heavy demin shirts, sometimes a knit hat and even a fleece scarf around my neck. Shawl and lap blanket if were just sitting around.

Ya'll sound like you have thryoid freddie troubles! Do a home iodine patch test to see if you do.

Also, I love winter. The colder the better. I function much better in the cold, and so does my entire family. If we're too hot we are grumpy and totally uncomfortable.

I, too, am in menopause. Thought I was through it but it's back with a vengence, especially at night. Up to change my nightie and take a shower and everything some nights. I can't WAIT for the weather to get cold. Last night I was outside on the back deck at 3:00 a.m. trying to cool off. The sky was lovely, but it was 3:00 a.m.!! I need my sleep and lately I'm just not getting as much as I need.

Anyhow, I agree that layering is the way to go. I do it when I snowshoe or cross-country because I always work up to being waaaaay too warm. I don't wear any particular brand or material or anything. Just layer with whatever you have. I used to wear my DH's long underwear but he said I couldn't wear the tops anymore because I put "bump dents" in it. I guess he didn't want to look "booby" in his own underwear!

Marly, I am in Southern California, the high desert, I am at 3800 foot elevation, so we get up to 115 for a few days in the height of summer, averageing 105, and down right cold in the winter, most of the time, but I can remember a Thanksgiving where we had the cooler on, and then a way early freeze in early september. We've had snow flurries in June also. You can never be sure what mother nature is gonna throw at ya here, right now , " WE NEED RAIN", we are so dry it is scary.

I do many of the above mentioned. But the #1 thing I do to stay warm is to drink plenty of water. When I am dehydrated I am sooo cold.

Okay, I am going on a search for flannel lined jeans! I posted on the barter forum, just in case, but no one has any.... I will be out and about in the city today, so I will try goodwill.... I know Ebay has some, will try there too!
You girls are too funny though! I am going through menopause, well, the before hand part, I had the hot flashes a couple of years ago, now I am just back to being cold!!!

I am a turtle-neck and wool sweater girl when it gets cold here. But not just any wool sweater.....I have several ski sweaters that came from Norway when my parents lived there. They lived in Oslo BEFORE I was born (I'm 51) and those sweaters are still the BEST!

At night...I love my flannel sheets and layers of quilts.

Hey Brenda,

I saw your post regarding a crochet hat ~ I do crochet a little, but have never attempted a cute little hat. I found the two favorites I wear during the cold weather at a wonderful shop in Norman, Oklahoma across from the University & bought them both as I couldn't decide between them ! One had a fanciful crochet flower added to it & the other has a standout vintage button that looks like a piece of jewelry. Each is loosely styled, somewhat beanie-like ~ but both really remind me of a vintage felt style hat Mrs. Walton would have worn to town. Neither too tight or confining, but close to the head with no wide brim to catch a breeze and blow off. I have long hair, so this style of hat works for me indoors or out. I love the way they keep me warm and feel stylish at the same time.

I make, sew & stitch a lot of things but when I find something so sweet already made I fall in love with, I always love to support another's work. Perhaps another Farm Girl makes (or could make) something like these....or an etsy search may turn up something either knitted or crochet.

I do love Southeast Oklahoma weather ! Winters can be severe, but it never lasts too long, unlike in the northern states. When ice storms take out the power, or we are snowed in for a few days, everyone just relies on the old ways, which never go out of style in my neck of the woods.

School is out for Deer Week here - I am wondering how many communities across the U.S. get out for Deer Week?

a blessed Friday to everyone !

Nancy

My DH and I cross-country ski and snowshoe quite a bit. Rather than using a beanie type thing (that never stays on my head) we've gotten used to using earbands (that's what we call them anyhow!) They are like a headband only wider. There are many who crochet or knit who could whip up a couple of these in about an hour. They are not hard to do at all. Lots of online "recipes" I would assume.

Brenda, don't forget the camisole that comes very close to the skin--snug I guess you could call it. That seems to keep me warmer as the days get colder here, although we haven't had much problem with that lately--woke up to 50°F this morning.

I just checked the LL Bean website, and they do have flannel lined jeans and flannel lined chinos. But they are all out of the tall size, which is what I would want (inseam 32). So I'm still looking.

I dress in layers when it gets really frigid here in Nebraska but I find a pot of hot tea helps as well...but then I can drink that whether hot or cold.
