Barnyard Buddies:  Tala is very sick  |

Tala got taken to the emergency vet last night. She has been coughing but seemed to be getting better and hadn't gone off her feed. Then she started going down hill on Friday evening. By yesterday she was bad enough we had to take her in.
Usually she would be more closely watched but I didn't realize that the barn manager was gone for the weekend and the stable hands were running the show. It goes without saying that they don't really recognize when a horse is sick.
So she has pneumonia with a bacterial infection in the blood. :( She also is very dehydrated and sore from breathing with her flank muscles. They have her on IV fluids and antibiotics but we are going to have to bring her home because we can't afford the Hospital care. Luckily I have some vet training so I can give shots and such and I will be making her a mash to eat and hopefully keep her hydrated. *sigh* Poor horse.

OMG, I am so very sorry, she is in my prayers, along with you and yours, have them put a pic-line in for you, so you can continue to give IV injections or hang saline or glucose it will be simple for you.

Alee, I know she will get better with your love and care. Poor horse. That just amazes me how animals can get pneumonia in this hot weather.

Tala and you are in my prayers. We had 5 horses when we were younger and have had to give the inections and many other things through the years. Glad she is improving. Lucky you caught it when you did. Keep us posted.

So glad your horse is doing so much better! Tala is a very lucky horse to have you I will keep both of you in my prayers and I am so happy Tala is responding so quickly to treatment.

Oh no, Alee! I hope she is on the way to mending...when horses get sick, well, their systems are just so sensitive, it can be awful. I am crossing fingers for speedy recovery!

Thanks ladies! The vet called me last night since we had been seeing two different things- I was stressed because she wasn't eating in front of me, and not eating the grain I bought her, and she was snarfing the grain in front of him. They had advised me to buy equine senior for her since it is easy to digest for sick horses. Well it turns out she doesn't like the grain I bought... Sheesh! Talk about spoiled!
