I have a new friend hanging around outside. This little hummingbird stops for a visit everyday. This morning when I came in from dropping the kids at school, he was hovering in front of the porch and he brought a friend.
But I can't for anything figure out why they like my yard. I only have a rose bush and they're no where near it. No feeders or any other flowers. Any ideas why they like my house so much?

Melanie, I have a few way out here. I can sit outside and they fly all around me. I have one feeder and lots of flowers. I planted a bunch of cardinal flowers for them too. Evry year towards the end of winter when they get back here they will come to my front windows to tell us they are back and need some sugar water. Isn't that neat? I love those birds. I found their nest once. It is so small. Very fun birds to have around. And very noisy little guys too!
Have fun with yours. It may be telling you it needs some sugar water for it's long journey coming up.

You are so lucky! I love hummingbirds and I wish I had some in my yard. I think it is just way too hot for them here. I hope you get more and if you figure out what is attracting them, please let us know! Proud Farmgirl #1987

Hi Melanie, You should put up a feeder! I have one that I put up every year, and they come back and look for it. It is on the overhang, right by my kitchen door/window. They will come right up to us and one once landed on my daughter's finger. You can make your own sugar water. That's what they like best. They also like the flowers in my yard, including some weeds on the front hill. Enjoy!

Melanie:
Are there any shrubs or trees nearby? Hummingbirds will often nest in large shrubs that are protected by the eves of a house and will hover nearby to protect their nest if you get too close. They could also be attracted to small flying insects (gnats, mosquitos, etc) or a water source near your porch. If they spend part of their year in a place with lots of people they may also associate humans with food. If you choose to hang up a feeder fill it with a solution of 1/4 cup sugar per cup of boiled water. You shouldn't use food coloring as it can be unhealthy for the birds. They will still find it if your feeder has red or purple on it.
Cheers! ~ Marilyn
