This may be a dumb question, but could I make my own pastry cloth? What material does it use? I don't have one, and now that I am getting back into making homemade bread (sandwich etc), I would love to have one.

Kristina, I guess I'll do an unabashed, shameful promotion of my business, but the Oklahoma Pastry Cloth™ is what I do for a living. :-) I have all kinds of sizes including custom sizes. Check out the website below! You get free goodies with an order too. :-)

Duck cloth is what you need. It's a heavy canvas. Joanne's carries it. But I would recommend going with Mary Beth's stuff. She has great stuff! :)

A pastry cloth is a cloth that you rub flour into and then use to roll out and cut doughs like pie crust, noodles, biscuits and cookies or to knead doughs like bread. The ones from overseas are a thin material meant to be thrown away after several uses, but mine comes with a nonskid backing so it doesn't slide all over your countertops and mine are made of 100% heavy, heavy cotton that will last forever. The large, xlg and bigger are much bigger than the other commercial ones, hence, from Oklahoma (big as all outdoors!). You use it and then fold it up to store in the freezer and then when it gets really oily, throw it in the wash and hang to dry. There is no cleanup mess or anything on your counter. The base cloth that I use to make the cloths sells for $9.99 a yard and so I feel like my product is very reasonably priced. It also comes with a cute "Okalahoma Adage" that we have made up. It can be purchased alone or in a gift set. I have a friend who quit making pies until she got one of my pastry cloths. She has become one of my best salespeople!! She now makes all her crusts from scratch. Anyway, if you are curious, go to my website below and just take a look around!

I did look at your site and was thrilled with what I saw there. When I get paid, I'll see about ordering one. Which size works best?

Kristina, for the money, I like the 24 x 24 of you have the counter space. That gives you plenty of room to set dough off to the side if you are dividing dough and rolling it, etc. Some people like the 24 x 36 for that same reason, but if you don't do a huge amount of baking, the large is great. :-)

Debbie, thanks for the kind words! It has taken a whole lot of learning to maintain this whole new concept to me called a website!!! I have a wonderful young man who is friends with my son, who set it up and bails me out when I crash and burn!

Mary Beth - Glad to hear about throwing the pastry cloth in the freezer. My grandma always did that and made the best sour cream roll out sugar cookies which I can't seem to replicate - no pastry cloth. I will check out your site.

Thanks - Jennifer

Great Jennifer. Yep, a nice, cold pastry cloth is especially wonderful for pie crusts and croissants too.

Thanks Mary Beth. I wish I had some baking supplies today. Our weather is so nice, and there is a nice breeze coming in.

I do can apple pie filling, so I will be making crusts from scratch now too.

I learned something new today. I've seen pastry cloths advertised, but I always thought - why do I want to roll out a piecrust on a rag/towel? (No offense...) My mom always used waxed paper - which is okay, as long as your dough isn't too moist (the paper sticks, melts, and tears). I always had to watch how much water I used to "glue" it to the counter, then work quick before the paper dissolved. NOW I know there is an alternative! I'll have to put a real-live pastry cloth on my wish list.

Holly, what inspired me was one of those plastic roll-up mats. Ugh. I would put it on the counter and try to roll out a pie crust. While fighting the mat as it rolled up in front of me back over my dough, I'd be trying to scrape up the part I had rolled because there would always be a place where flour didn't stick but the dough did. I am sure that it was comical to watch. I wanted something that was really sturdy and would last forever and could be washed, so there came my idea.

I did it, I ordered the Pastry Cloth Gift Set so I could try some of the other Oklahoma goodies.
My husband and I lived for a few months in Lawton Oklahoma, many years ago like the late 1970's.
Thank you again Mary Beth.

Mary Beth, I am going to place an order. My sister-in-law lives in Edmond, Ok. And we were going to visit her in June, but things have come up and not gonna make it. Hopefully little later this year. I was going to contact you and see do you have a store that we could visit. Or is it all done online. Thought about even a farmgirl meet when I come. Thanks!

Oh Linda!! A Farm Girl meet for sure and I know just the place. Ask your sister about Inspirations Tea Room. You would absolutely love it.

Right now, I'm doing everything online, but we are working on a store. Gotta build a building but my dream is to have the store with blueberry bushes behind it and classes going on inside! :-)
Got your order and will make it a Farm Girl order too. Please do let me know if you are headed this way and I would love to meet your sister. :-)

I baked bread today. I'll have photos on my blog tomorrow or soon after. It turned out very nice. I used Mary Beth's recipe, because I had the ingredients. I was out of wheat flour, but I think I will have to buy the pastry cloth. Hopefully soon.

Yay, Kristina. :-) I baked two loaves of that yesterday and took it to our local meat packer to say "thank you" for saving me 30 lbs of beef kidney fat to render down for tallow. (Gonna try my hand at soapmaking!) I now have a new friend. :-)

I love MB's shop!! I keep saying I'm not gonna go there, as my DH is out of work right now, but I go anyway, and stare longingly at the gift set, and the kid's set!!&hearts&hearts them. I will be ordering things in triplicate when hubby gets back to work.

The tears I shed then, watered the flowers I harvest now.
