I know you all cook. I added some tips on the cookies...because those are things people have asked in the past. I also collect the dough scraps and reroll them and cut cookies from them twice. Then I toss.

I posted this on MJF so I just copied it for here.

Yesterday I was grocery shopping as the produce manager was marking down sliced & packaged veggies. I got a pkg of yellow squash for 60 cents and a pkg of zucchini for 53 cents. Filled two trays. Perfect for drying for soups and stews.

Also drying one Halo peel. I bought a sack of them so I will probably air dry the peels as I eat them unless I have something as to dry.

My sister gave me a pkg of baby carrots she didn't want so I will chop them in food processor and dry them later today for muffins.

Tomorrow I will be drying kale.

Thinking I want to start my sour dough starters today... been busy trying to keep up with my water kefir and kombucha. We also just bought 11 gallons of frozen goat milk from a friend that is getting ready to move to OK. I might use some of that to make some mozzarella cheese!

Shannon your kitchen is a buzz today. Let us know how the cheese making turns out. I have a recipe for ricotta cheese that uses store milk. Pasteurized not ultra-pasteurized or UHT. I have no idea what my store carries so I guess I will be reading labels.

I'm not sure if I will get to the cheese... I still have to homeschool the children as well, so it depends on how that progresses. Some days they do pretty well with me teaching and giving instruction and then they work independently. Other times they are very very hands-on, all day long! So far, things are moving along pretty smoothly. Two out of three are done their spelling tests :)

Shannon, my husband was asking me about kombucha. I don't know anything. My aunt made a tea, perhaps, with a big mushroom. Was that a kombucha??? Where could he order one or some from?? Help needed please.

Marilyn - that does indeed sound like kombucha. It is a tea fermented by a mushroom, or scoby. (Think of the "mother" for apple cider vinegar). It is very high in probiotics. You brew tea with sweetener, and then let the scabby ferment the tea. I will ask my hubby about sending you one of our "babies" so that you can start brewing it. I received my baby from Kelly o'Neal (LovinRChickens) - she generally barters for them. I've tried starting it from a dehydrated scabby from cultures for health and it did not work well at all!!! Quite honestly, I do not drink the kombucha as I do not care for it, but my hubby and children LOVE it!!! I stick with my water kefir :)

Marilyn - I spoke with hubby. We should have a baby strong enough to send you next week, along with directions. (As in a little over a week from today). Will that work for you???

Today my kitchen is busy. Grated carrots in dehydrator, oxtail broth on the stove, sweet peppers to be pickled in fridge, and kale to dry when the carrots are done. May start a quart of red cabbage sauerkraut - if not today tomorrow. The corned beef will be ready to cook tomorrow.

Sara, how did you corn beef turn out?

Oxtail broth, that's new to me. Where to you purchase a oxtail? Is this a southern cuisine?

The corned beef was okay but I need to work on the seasoning to get it just right. Will definitely do it again.

I get ox-tail from the grocery store. These days I would guess it's more cow-tail than ox-tail. Don't know if it's southern or nationwide. Probably came out of the same need to feed your family on very little money as cooking neckbone. So I guess it does lend itself to being southern. Must say neckbone is not one of my favorites. Times have changed and ox-tail is not cheap anymore. A pkg of ox-tail will cost you as much as a $10 roast. It is good for you and makes a very good broth.

Blueberries were on sale today 2 pints for $5. Drying one pint for All-Bran muffins with dried carrots. Should be a good combination when I get around to making them.

Sara, what about the texture of the corned beef. I did not like the very fine texture, very similar to ground gobbler.

You are brave to try new things. I can not do that because of my meat and potatoes husband. I salute you.

The texture was good.

Marilyn, cooking for one has it's ups but it also has it's downs. Sometimes it would be nice to have someone to cook meat and potatoes for. As long as he was here for supper and not breakfast. I'm content not to share my closets with anyone. Have no idea what brought on this fit of philosophizing.

I know, my sister was single, ( twice divorced), built a new home, elaborate decorations each season...then about ten years later she starts dating again.
Go figure!!! Like our mother, " she was lonely." She has two married children, four grand kids ( two are grown, two are little), one is married and she is a great grandmother. She even lives within 15 minutes of all of them, and still works...and I am still in disbelief.
Where in all of that did she find time to be lonely???

Today I made chocolate frosting using avocado, powdered sugar, cocoa powder and a little vanilla. It actually turned out to be good. I have a grand-daughter that is lactose intolerant and thought I would give it a try. She loves chocolate cake. I have a Krazy Kake recipe that doesn't use milk or eggs. It is wonderful chocolate cake.

Shannon -

I am hesitant to even try Kombucha - I do not eat mushrooms, so because they say it starts with a mushroom I am not trying it. You said you do not like it - what does it taste like? What is Kefir? I've heard a lot about it, too. And does it have a taste?
