I saw this on another site. You put either one of those little battery lights or a small tea light in side and it makes a really pretty light. This old lateran has a red globe, I have another one that has a blue globe. I tried it with a small tea light and it was really pretty. I don't remember where I got the laterans but when I was looking at them the other day I thought I should make use of them. So Richard painted them for me, and there it is.

It's beautiful. I bet it looks awesome when you have the lights off.

Hi Nancy, Really cute lantern but don't put a red light on your front porch. You might get unwanted company.

I have one just like it. It is an old railroad lantern. Mine has “Long Island Railroad” on the glass. I did this same thing a few years back (it was on my blog at the time). It isn’t the easiest to do, as the bottom isn’t fitted for a tea light, however, a canning jar lid fits inside the bottom. You just have to take the whole thing apart every time. I moved mine to a hook in the kitchen because after awhile, it started to weather.
I am curious...why do you not want a red light on the porch? What does it signify? I have not heard anything about that...

Nicole - Houses of ill repute used to have red torchlights. I believe the custom came from railroad men hanging their lanterns there before they entered.

The railroad men used their red lanterns hung outside so they could be found in case of an emergency according to legend and folklore.

ROTFL!!!! Oh my goodness, I NEVER thought of that with my lantern! Too funny. I suppose that is what is meant by “red light district”?

Nancy, what a great idea for using your lantern!!! I think the red one will be especially fun at Christmas and Fourth of July decorating. Enjoy your new repurposing for such a nice example of a past era.
